Christmas is a stressful time of year. Sure, it’s jolly and festive and fun, but there’s always an underlying feeling of stress hidden beneath those Christmas smiles. There’s shopping to be done, presents to wrap, plans to make, and plenty of food to cook and biscuits to bake. Worry not, because I’ve got you covered with my white Christmas sangria – the best way to calm your festive nerves. Or get you blind drunk. It’s really up to you.
One of the many brilliant perks to living in South Africa is that Christmas occurs in the summer season. And if you’ve ever been to South Africa from December to March, you’ll know that our summers are pure bliss. Instead of evenings spent by the fire with a mug of hot chocolate in hand and snow-capped vistas beyond the window, we’ve got warm weather, golden sunshine and days of lounging by the pool with chilled drinks flowing freely. Because the only frosty thing about a South African Christmas is the ice-cold cocktails, spritzers and beers!
This white Christmas sangria is the perfect way to keep your stress-levels in check this festive season, and give you a cool retreat from the hot summer days. It’s crisp and refreshing with a sweet, fruity flavor. Served icy cold and ready within minutes, it’s the perfect addition to your Christmas lunch table!
White Christmas Sangria
- 2 tbsp white sugar
- 750ml bottle semi-sweet white wine
- 500 ml bottle soda water
- 330 ml bottle carbonated apple or white grape juice
- 2 quartered limes
- 1 cup strawberries
- 3-4 sprigs fresh rosemary (be sure to wash them!)
In a large jug, mix together sugar and white wine. Stir until the sugar has dissolved
Stir in soda water and carbonated apple/white grape juice
Add the lime and rosemary. Chill in the fridge until ready for serving, at least one hour
Add strawberries and ice, and serve immediately
- This drink is best enjoyed immediately. The strawberries go soggy and turn the drink pink if left overnight.
